About the Orchestra

Formed in 1987 the Ballarat Symphony Orchestra is a well-established community orchestra with a long and proud history of performance in Ballarat.  The Orchestra is managed by a Committee of Management, currently chaired by Mr Jeff Moran.  Our Principal Conductor is Mr Mark Shiell. Orchestra members are all volunteers, who give their time freely.

We present three concerts each year at the Wendouree Centre for Performing Arts, as well as performing at occasional community or other events.

The orchestra plays a wide repertoire and features a range of soloists throughout each year.

I am pleased to announce that the Ballarat Symphony Orchestra has appointed Yvonne Holley as its new Leader.  Yvonne replaces Tony Conolan, our respected, long term former leader who resigned last year after a lengthy illness.

Yvonne has been a member of the BSO for over 15 years and has led the orchestra on many occasions.  She plays in pit orchestras for Ballarat Light Opera Company and Lyric Theatre, is the founder and 1st violin for The Eureka Strings, and is a well regarded classroom music teacher and string specialist in Ballarat.  We are looking forward to the continued development of the orchestra under Yvonne's leadership.
I would also like to thank Kate Carman who has very capably acted in the Leader role during Tony's absence.
